May 2016, Day 14, Kotoyuki v Kaisei

I feel for young Kotoyuki – the 25-year-old had his first tournament at the exalted rank of Sekiwake, only one position beneath Yokozuna and Ozeki, but couldn’t manage the eight wins needed to keep the rank. Not for lack of trying today against Kaisei, he just ran into a giant wall that couldn’t be moved and then gassed out at the end. But I expect good things in the future from Kotoyuki, and if he wins tomorrow he’ll probably stay in the sanyaku (top four ranks) at Komusubi.
