Sekiwake Takayasu is lighting it up this tournament, with wins over two Ozeki and a Yokozuna going into today’s bout with Yokozuna Harumafuji. Harumafuji wants a win to stay close to tournament leader Goeido, and Takayasu has to seriously consider this a building block towards Ozeki promotion (33 wins over 3 consecutive tournaments from the rank of Sekiwake). Big battle right off the tachiai, with Harumafuji coming out ahead after some big blows from both wrestlers, but Takayasu just . . manages . . . to . . . plant his left foot on the straw and twist his hips away from Harumafuji, who can’t stay upright despite a good belt grip. Takayasu tumbles off the dohyo, but the Yokozuna lands first. Now there are three wrestlers tied at two wins behind 11-0 Goeido: Harumafuji and Endo (who both lost today) and Takayasu. I’m excited about the future of this promising young wrestler.
