November 2016, Day 1, Goeido v Tochiozan

Ozeki Goeido has one goal this tournament – win the championship and earn a promotion to Yokozuna. Now all he has to do is not think about that at all, and focus on each opponent – 15 days is a long time, with a lot of opportunities for nerves to spoil your performance. He looks solid on Day 1, starting off aggressive and pushing Tochiozan right to the edge. But what’s most reassuring is the way he survives the last-second attempt by Tochiozan to sidestep and push him down. Goeido keeps his feet underneath him and shows good balance, staying in the ring to finish the job.
