November 2016, Day 1, Harumafuji v Tamawashi

Yokozuna Harumafuji is on the wrong end of the tournament’s first big upset, losing decisively to Komusubi Tamawashi. Tamawashi wins the tachiai, deflecting Harumafuji off to the side before charging from this dominant position with a strong hand to the throat. The normally resilient Harumafuji has no time to readjust and finds himself in midair headed towards the expensive seats. The fleet-footed referee gets out of the way and Harumafuji lands on a judge seated ringside, but everyone escapes unscathed. Except for Harumafuji’s pride. Little scratch there.
