January 2017, Day 8, Kakuryu v Shodai

Yokozuna Kakuryu is on his game today against Shodai, with a completely dominating performance. He follows a bruising tachiai with great series of alternating right and left palms to Shodai’s chin, not letting Shodai settle into any kind of stable position. Kakuryu continues to mix things up, diving low for a feint at Shodai’s belt. This sends Shodai scrambling backwards with hands dropped in defense, so Kakuryu heads back upstairs for another massive shove at Shodai’s unprotected head. Shodai flies backwards off the dohyo, landing on the head judge seated ringside. Kakuryu picks up his fifth win, and Shodai his fifth loss.
