March 2017, Day 10, Daieisho v Myogiryu

The calm before the storm. There’s something about the stillness before a sumo bout, the proximity of the two wrestlers staring at each other before launching into a flurry of movement. The action feels like it’s over in an instant, but repeated viewing reveals a complex interaction of shifting tactics. Or, alternatively, two big guys smash into each other until one falls down or goes out. Daieisho pushes out Myogiryu after Myogiryu inadvisably pulls down on Daieisho. A long conference of the judges decides that Myogiryu’s foot stepped out first.
